Useful Practices - Runway Light Markers

Submitted by Richard Helgeson, Airport Manager, Two Harbors Airport

Dick Helgeson at Two Harbors Airport has found a way to successfully protect runway lights from plow and snow removal equipment during winter months. Maintenance staff at the Two Harbors airport install simple markers so that lights are easily seen by plow operators. The easy-to-install markers are ordered from Gasser Banners in Nashville, Tennessee (phone: 615-361-0998). Prices range from $2.25 to $2.85 each depending on the number ordered. The clamp and uni-strut needed to complete the installation can be ordered from any electrical supply store.

These same markers are used also at the Albert Lea airport.
For information on ordering or installing these markers, contact Helgeson at 218-834-2162.

In addition, several commercially available products are available that are designed to mount directly to the light base. For example, Sherwin Industries has a flexible airport Taxi-way Light Marker, which can be viewed online at www.sherwinindustries.com/graphic/light.jpg. The Sherwin Industries Web site is located at www.sherwinindustries.com.
