About the 2006 Forum

The 2006 AirTAP Fall Forum brought together airport personnel and experts from across Minnesota to learn about new airport technology, insurance issues, pavement maintenance techniques, environmental concerns, and many more topics.

Speaker's presentations are now available for download or viewing (see individual sessions or speakers, below). A forum summary publication will be available in spring 2007.

Day 1 - Wednesday, October 11

9:30 – 9:45 a.m. Welcome

9:45 – 10:45 a.m. Minnesota Airport Funding Status General Session

Hear an update on funding for Minnesota airports at both the state and national level.

11:00 a.m.  – 12:00 noon Learn to be an Effective Airport Advocate General Session

Learn the role of state legislative committees and committee chairs, how the legislature is structured, effective strategies for communicating with local boards and commissions, and how to package requests effectively.

12:00 – 1:30 p.m. Buffet Lunch with State Legislators

Sen. Ann Rest and Rep. Mike Beard will give their perspective on legislative issues important to Minnesota airports.

Managing Snow and Ice Control Operations  

Airport Initiation  

Learn best practices for keeping pavement surfaces clean of snow and ice, using chemicals and blades effectively, assessing pavement condition, communicating with pilots, issuing NOTAMS, adhering to regulations, and more.

New to airports? Share your challenges and concerns with other airport managers and staff. This session is for both new and experienced airport managers, who will talk about critical issues for GA airports and facilities.

Promoting the Benefit of Your Airport  

Share ideas and best practices, network with other maintenance staff, and ask others what they’re doing to solve common maintenance problems.

Discuss the regional impact of your airport, sell the value of your airport to other municipalities within your region, implement innovative funding ideas, and balance revenue and expenses.

Pavement Distress and Maintenance: Part 1 

What Does the New Land Use Handbook Have to Offer?  

Learn how to identify typical distresses, make appropriate repairs, and use new materials and techniques.

Work with a zoning case study and use the Land Use Handbook to rewrite an amended ordinance.

Pavement Distress and Maintenance: Part 2

Managing Airport Storm Water Runoff

Conduct an on-site evaluation of concrete and bituminous pavements, with guidance for identifying distresses in the field.

Hear a presentation on NPDES permit requirements and other rules for GA airports. Learn how to develop a storm water pollution prevention plan, when to hire a consultant, how environmental rules affect agricultural spraying, and how to develop a Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures plan for fuel systems.
